Fabric Friday: Fabulous Pillowcase Dresses

I have been reading the comments from Wednesday's post about the wood pedestal table. It looks like there are lots of skeptical men out there. I really liked the comment from
Late Bloomers said...
Really nice! And I love your comment about your hubby trusting you... what is that about? Mine asks me 'will it look good...?'. 'No, actually I'm trying to make it look like crap. Does anything I do look bad?' Oy Vey!
You just have to love the men. They will never understand.

Remember: Fabric Art is sold locally at

I do not have any new fabric creations, so I am going to repost a design from November.

Recently a friend gave me a stack of vintage, hand-embroidered pillowcases. I had no idea what to do with them, so I just put them in a basket in my shop in Pasadena. They are cute and somebody will be nostalgic and want to buy them, right? Well, there they sat and sat and sat.
I don’t have any little girls and my grandSON isn’t very  feminine. So, I didn’t know about the latest rage, pillowcase dresses.

My sweet young friend, Maria, came to our quilting, sewing, craft night with material to make a Halloween dress for Liliana. I went home,  searched the internet and started making pillowcase dresses.nap mat 013nap mat 015

They are so easy to make. The original pattern said to measure up from the bottom 20″, so that’s what I did. I then notched out a “J” for the armhole. I used the material that I had cut off to make a binding for the armholes. The last sewing step was the casing for the ribbon tie.

Last Sunday, I took the dress to church to check sizes and get some reactions. Everyone loved them. The suggestion was to make them a little longer. I tried it on a 2T and a teenager. The neck is a drawstring, so it can be tightened or loosened. As the sweetheart grows, she can wear leggings or pants under the dress. During the winter, she can add a t-shirt under it or a sweater over it.

Other fabric designs can be found in the blog header.

Check back Monday and find out what I find Marvelous.

  1. Hi, I'm sorry about that. You can take any photo and download it into photobucket, save it and get the html code from there. Or just shoot me an e-mail at janeabernard@aol.com and I'll reply with the code for you.

Thanks for trying to link up!

  2. Oye Melanie. Sorry about that button link. I am so done with html! Why can't there just be a simple plain English tutorial for these kinds of things? Thanks for the sweet words about my banner, I ended up making 4 different ones, but my husband said that one looked the best. I promise if I find a new and successful button tutorial I will let you know.

Oh, and I am so glad that I am not the only one who hates typing in those dumb word verification things when trying to leave a comment. Sometimes that deters me from leaving a comment, especially when you type your comment, hit submit, then have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to enter the weird word and submit the comment all over again. Ugh.

And your dresses are adorable! I can't wait till my daughter is running around in cute dresses like your Liliana.
